Czech Republic

Prague

Valentines and large cocktails

Prague Bridge, St Thomas's Bridge
Day 1;
When looking out the window of the taxi on our way into the city of Prague from the airport, we could automatically see just how beautifully different it was to any other city or country we had been to. The enormous buildings drew in our want to explore and the historical architecture sort to tell a million stories.

We walked through the many streets and came across a large tower. Once inside you could see the old structures that had still been left in place and once reaching the top, in a lift that felt like it almost shouldn't be there, you could look out over the tall buildings and across to the raised town behind. Looking down over the city almost gave it a calmness. When walking through the rest of the building we came across large bells, and a floor covered with a map of Prague. Once we stepped outside of this tower we saw just how old fashioned the buildings actually were and how they kept the historical feel to the city alive. The many carved out arches and curved buildings showed the time and effort that had once gone into this magnificent buildings.

When attempting to find other historical factors of the beautiful city we, of course, came across a sex toy museum.

Although this wasn't the culture I was particularly looking for it was quite funny looking at all the different types of pleasure through the years, even if the majority of them did look like they would hurt quite badly. Next stop was a bit more child-friendly as we visited a sweet shop near by. It was an old fashioned building with low roofs and wooden containers which held the never ending piles of sweets in. Although we didn't end up buying any the smells made it incredibly hard not to be drawn in.

After all that excitement, we continued walking, across bridges and through little streets. The views of the river with the incredible backdrop posed a great picture opportunity that we ended up taking advantage of.

That evening, with it being valentines day, we carried on our tradition of canal boats and had a three-course buffet meal with a lovely glass of Prosecco.

Following this, we ended up exploring Prague’s nightlife… and soon found that it was a place that we could definitely see ourselves coming back to again and again. Not only was it cheap but the people we met within the bars were so friendly that by the end of the first night we had already made a group of friends which put us at ease when exploring the bars and clubs.

John Lennon's Wall, Prague
Day 2;

Even with the slight hangover we had we managed to get up and power through as there were so many more places I wanted to see and explore.

We first came across a little padlock bridge over a little river. After stopping to look at the couples stating their love we continued on to John Lennon’s wall which Alex wasn't too impressed by but I thought was pretty beautiful. It was painted in colour with pictures, words and song lyrics. There was also a man singing and playing the guitar along to The Beatles and the fact that so many people had gathered to view this one wall showed the impact the band and John Lennon alone had on so many people.

Once Alex started getting bored of staring at a wall we decided to continue walking. We came across an upward walk way which we decided to follow. Once climbing hundreds of steps and walking up roads that were more like hills we found a gated off palace and a whole new town. Walking through this town although very similar to the city below it showed how little treasures were hidden away within this city and I feel that if we were to return to Prague there would be much more to find. When walking through this town there wasn't the busy feel that the city below had which made it even more peaceful and calm. We soon came across a park that was layered in snow and ice that had not melted yet which made our walk through it very challenging.

Although being able to see over the Prague landscape made it kind of worth the effort. After walking through the park we found an easier mode of transport in which to travel down the large hill. This came in the form of a tram which we heading down almost felt unsafe, but the fact that you could view what you were passing from the windows made the ride pretty picturesque.

By the time we made it to the bottom of the hill it was basically sun set and as we walked along the bridges back to our little apartment the colours in the sky merged creating an incredible pink colour fading into the left over blue sky. When walking we came across a traditional Czech restaurant selling food and beer. (Kozel) Being adventurous Alex ordered one of the traditional meals on the menu which posed as dumplings like bread slices and meat with gravy. Although, it wasn't the most appealing meal it wasn't as bad as we thought it was going to be but also wasn't nice enough to actually cure your hunger as it wasn't necessarily a meal which you'd order if you wanted a large meal and wanted to eat it all it was more just to go along with the traditional meals of the Czech Republic.

After finishing up our meals we headed back to the apartment and got ready for another night out in Prague’s city. When walking to a bar which we had looked up online we came across a large medieval clock which situated itself in the middle of a square (http://www.staromestskaradnicepraha.cz). The clock is such a landmark due to the fact that some of the original components are still functional and the basic structure of the machine has not changed since the middle ages. Once we had stared at the beautiful clock we continued on to Harley’s bar. This bar was incredible, it had an old biker theme to it and the drinks were cheap. I and Alex after many other drinks ended up getting a large sized pitcher of a Mojito meant for 7 people to ourselves…. with a flight the next day this probably wasn't the best move but we ended up having an amazing last night with some lovely people.
