La Garrotxa

If you are a nature lover you should not miss visiting the most volcanic area in the Iberian Peninsula, la Garrotxa. It is located in the Catalan Pirineo, in the province of Girona.

A beautiful region naturally created thousands of years ago thanks to the volcanic activities. The huge variety of substrates and the differences of altitude and orientations of the mountains creates a unique microclimate in this small area, with an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna: Mediterranean, centre European and Atlantic.
We stayed in the beautiful city of Olot, where you can find both calm places to relax and the traditional fun and warmth of Spain.
There is protected Natural Park where you can find vast and dense forests, the more important known as Fageda d’en Jordà; rivers and waterfalls; plenty of mountains and volcanos, such as El Croscat, Santa Margarita, Montsacopa, Bisaroques, Garrinada and Montolivet.

The area is also known for its Cultural Heritage with medieval villages, romanesque hermitages and bridges, archaeological remains and much more.
You should let yourself be carried away by your senses in Sant Joan de Les Fonts. A place with plenty of interesting routes you will totally enjoy. Splendid places created by nature: colours, textures, shapes, silence, tree’s whispers, smells...

Castellfollit de la Roca, is one of the must-visit villages. It is located on top of a basalt quarry and it keeps all its medieval charm.
La Fageda d’en Jordà is a mystical and unique forest. Its name is due to the huge amount of beech trees (Faig in Catalan) it has.

It is also known for the leaves chromatic scale you can find and the ground’s prominences or small hills formed by lava flows when cooling hundred of years ago. You can take a beautiful walk by horse carriage, which by the way are mostly rescued horses with a second opportunity and really well treated.
